Software As A Service Rising

Have you noticed that more software is available as an on-line service? The new term for this category is Software as a Service (SaaS) and we are writing a blog about it, from speculations on the future, to practical advice to ISVs and users, on the IBM PartnerWorks site at http://www-106.ibm.com/developerworks/blogs/dw_blog.jspa?blog=494

A recent convert to the SaaS lifestyle is Black Duck, a software provider whose protextP/OnDemand is an Internet-hosted service that helps companies mitigate business risk by validating proper use of open source software within their intellectual property (IP) assets. The new service is aimed at independent software vendors (ISVs), outsourcers, and due diligence teams.  It enables automatic analysis of software projects to discover open source software and assure that licensing obligations are met. Software developers can quickly and easily address emerging IP compliance requirements with a level of accuracy not previously possible and without time-consuming and expensive manual methods.   Black Duck’s Dan Ring suggested to me that one use they’re seeing for the service is the one-time inspection of software as part of a merger or acquisition.
