Evermore (The Chinese Office Suite) Ships

We’ve written before (http://www.wohl.com/wa04-16.htm and http://www.wohl.com/wa03-92.htm) about Evermore, the Chinese Office Suite with an uncanny resemblance to Microsoft Office Suite and good interoperability (about the same level as OpenOffice 1.1. Written in Java, EIOffice w004 can run on Windows or Linux.  It integrates word processing, spreadsheet, and presentations into a single application with a unified user interface and a single data repository.

The product is now shipping to users in the U.S. and China.

You can get information at www.evermoresw.com.

The Chinese company, Wuxi Evermore Software Inc. has made a deal with Japan’s Internet Telephone Company to develop a Japanese language version of the product.

Corel (WordPerfect) 12

Corel now bills its WordPerfect Office Suite as “the other Office” and as a “value priced alternative.”  Corel executive Richard Carriere, Director of Office Productivity, claims that the Corel WordPerfect suite is as much as 63% lower priced than Microsoft’s comparable offering.

WordPerfect once ruled the word processing market, in the number one position for PC word processing software from the mid-eighties until 1991, when Microsoft Word displaced it.  The product has 18 million users worldwide and is viewed as a value-priced option, with a rich, mature feature set and good interoperability with Microsoft’s Office applications.

New features include a Workspace Mangers which permits the user interface to be customized to be more like Microsoft Office, Lotus 1-2-3, or older versions of WordPerfect, as well as special editions such as Legal.  Users can publish documents to PDF and XML formats.

WordPerfect Office 12 is now available through Corel's network of reseller and distribution partners. Suggested retail price runs from $299.99 for the full version to $99.99 for a student and teacher edition.  A professional edition, including the Paradox database is priced at $349.99.  Lower upgrade pricing, for both WordPerfect and competitive product users, is available.

We still see WordPerfect being used in legal offices, in state and local government, and in small offices where price and value is an important issue.
