In Memoriam:  John W. Seybold

This month, John W. Seybold, the founder of The Seybold Report and, for many, the grandfather of computer typesetting, passed away.  He was 88.

I first met John when he ran Rocappi Press, an early digital typesetting endeavor in the late 60’s or early 70’s.  I was working in the specialty chemical industry and we purchased what may have been the first digitally produced chemical catalog from him.

In the industry, he is remembered not only for his own vision but also for the legacy he left:  three children, Jonathan, Andrew, and Patricia, each of whom has left their own legacy for the computer industry.

I’ve never forgotten the sight of his electronic equipment in its colonial farmhouse – or of John, challenging us to try something new and better.
