SCO Plunges; Targets Seem Unimpressed

SCO has finally taken the plunge and sued some of its UNIX licensees, claiming they are in violation of their agreements.  Neither AutoZone.com nor Daimler Chrysler seems inclined to rush to sign licenses since it isn’t clear that SCO has a right to ask for them.

This won’t be resolved until it becomes clearer just exactly what Novell sold to SCO when it sold them the right to collect royalties from current UNIX licensees and sell licenses to new licensees (but not, it appears much else).  If, as Novell claims, they (Novell) retained the right to waive any claims against licensees that predated the SCO sale, SCO’s desire to sue and sell new anti-Linux licenses probably isn’t worth much.

As always, the best source for the latest documents (and infinite open source community comment) is www.groklaw.net.  I allow myself 15 minutes (at least) every afternoon as a special treat.
