Busy Red Hat

Red Hat Adds Application Software

Red Hat has changed and extended its business model, announcing the Red Hat Enterprise Application family of products.  This software portfolio will start with Content Management and Portal servers (from their acquisition of Ars Digita) to go with their Enterprise Linux software.  This will allow Red Hat to offer a complete enterprise solution, delivered and managed through the Red Hat Enterprise Network and provided with the same 24/7 support.

The Red Hat Enterprise Content Management System and Portal Server are available now.   We’d guess that Red Hat partners who offer their own Linux infrastructure software may be less than thrilled with this turn of events.  We’d like to tell you how they compare on price, but we’ve been unable so far to get pricing details.

Red Hat Is Extending Its Partner Activities

Red Hat is very busy.  In addition to its new software offerings, it has been signing up new relationships with Linux hardware vendors.  For example,

HP and Red Hat have signed an agreement making HP a preferred global service provider to deliver and support the complete Red Hat Enterprise Linux product line on HP industry-standard hardware.

This includes Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS, Enterprise Linux ES and Enterprise Linux WS.  Red Hat will deliver technical support to back up HP's customer support services.   HP will support the Red Hat Enterprise Linux family of solutions on both 32-bit Intel architecture and Itanium platforms.

This is in addition to existing Red Hat agreements with vendors like IBM who simply expanded their existing agreements with Red Hat to support the entire Red Hat line, including the new products.

Red Hat then received a further endorsement.  It’s been a poorly kept secret that the Sun Linux distribution was actually an augmented version of Red Hat.  Sun has now decided to forgo its own distribution and has now decided to ship the Red Hat Linux distribution, a bow in the direction of customers, who prefer the industry standard.
