Ed Zander To Head Motorola

When Ed Zander left Sun Microsystems, we were very sorry to see him go.  We felt that without his industry experience and ability to interact with customers and the industry, it would be a lot harder for Sun to hear what was going on and react.

Ed said when he left that he thought he’d like to be a CEO.  It looks like he’s gotten his wish – with an exclamation point!  Zander is the new CEO of Fortune 100 Motorola, succeeding Christopher Galvin as chairman and CEO.

He’ll have his work cut out for him.  Motorola is in need of a turnaround – and probably some rethinking of just what its core businesses might be.  But Zander really impressed the Motorola search committee.

Moreover, they must have impressed him, because he’s agreed to give up life in California to head up a Chicago-based company.  Buying a winter coat and boots will be first priority.  Figuring out how to get along with second-in-command Mike Zafirovski, now President and COO will be his next chore, although Ed his affably proposed hot-tub meetings, California-style, as a good way to kick off business discussions.  We hope his Chicago hot tub is inside.
