IBM’s WebSphere 5.0 Ships

IBM is now shipping the new version of its WebSphere infrastructure software for e-business on demand, including its WebSphere Application Server 5.0 and its Development Environment, WebSphere Studio 5.  The newest version of IBM’s infrastructure software focuses on tight integration, offering both more efficient application development and use of computing resources.  This is critical in the e-business environment, permitting businesses to respond quickly and flexibly to dynamic conditions.

WebSphere is the underlying platform for the entire IBM on-demand software offering, including Lotus Notes, DB2, and Tivoli.

IBM is now emphasizing new autonomic capabilities across its platforms and products and WebSphere is no exception.  This lowers the cost of administration and helps to provide a reliable, self-managed infrastructure.  It reduces the need for skilled workers, and provides the basis for implementing large-scale networks for grid computing.  Autonomic computing features in WebSphere include self-configuring, automatic tuning (including tuning for specific applications), managing interactions with other IBM software to optimize performance and resource utilization, and automatically detecting and resolving data-related problems.  In many cases, WebSphere can not only detect problems, but can also heal itself.  It can also protect itself against a variety of intrusions and other problems. (You’ll be looking, of course, as we will, for similar approaches from Sun and HP, both of whom are looking at their own “reducing complexity through automation” strategies.)

WebSphere Version 5 supports Windows, Linux, IBM eServer zSeries and iSeries, AIX, Solaris and HP-UX

A technology preview of WebSphere Application Server 5 is available for download at www.ibm.com/websphere/v5.   Prices start at $8,000 (single server configuration) or $12,000 (to support networked features such as clustering and failover), per processor.
