Sun Joins WS-I

Keep your fingers crossed.  We may get this to work at last.

After all the complications, the WS-I has finally voted to add two additional board members and, in anticipation of qualifying for one of those seats, Sun has joined WS-I.  (To be eligible for nomination to the board, candidates must be members and belong to a working committee.)  Sun will stand for the March 2003 election.

WS-I was founded in February 6, 2002 as an open industry effort chartered to promote Web services interoperability across platforms, applications and programming languages.

IBM seems as pleased as we are.  Bob Sutor, director of Web Services Strategy for IBM and one of the founding members of WS-I said, "As a leader in the Web services and Java communities, IBM is pleased to welcome Sun Microsystems to WS-I.org as our industry integrates and creates best practices for the Web services standards stack."

Sun’s Mark Herring, senior director for Java Web Services, noted that Sun had received requests from many parties to participate in WS-I and that Sun had always applauded its objectives.  “(We) intend to be energetic participants in the industry effort to promote transparency, openness and interoperability in the marketplace.”

Sun and IBM also participate in other Web Services standards organizations, together and separately.  Web Services is an important architectural and interoperability concept for the IT industry and we are delighted that all the major players are now on board.
