Buying Microsoft Word At The Right Price

We have discovered, courtesy of our friend and colleague David Coursey that how much you pay for a copy of Microsoft Word depends very much on how you buy it.

Most people, of course, buy Word either as part of Microsoft Office Suite (the current version, XP Standard Edition is $479) or as Microsoft Word 2002 ($339).  Both are available as upgrades for substantially less ($239 and $79.95 respectively).  Note:  All prices are suggested list prices; actual street prices are 12-20% less).

But there are other, entirely legal, ways to get Word.

If you are a student or teacher, full or part time, you may buy an Educational Edition of Microsoft Office, including Word, for $149.  Need we say that no one checks your student ID?

You may also buy a copy of the Works Suite, included with many home personal computers, which includes Microsoft Works (word processor, spreadsheet, database, and calendar), Money, Encarta, Picture It!, Photo, and Streets & Trips plus a full copy of Microsoft Word 2002 for $89.99.

If you bought the regular version of Works ($54.95), you can also buy an upgrade to Word 2002 for $79.

Thrifty shoppers have lots of options.
