Server Sales Suggest Linux Continues To Grow

We eye with continuing interest reports on server sales from Dataquest, which indicated both a growth in server shipments in the U.S. and strong growth for Linux.

Total US IA-32 server revenue for the second quarter was $1.7 billion or 433 units.  In a tight race, HP beat Dell for first place, with IBM a distant third.

In the Linux market, IA-32 server revenue was $220 million or 60K units, with Dell nosing out Dell on Revenue but not on Units Shipped, and IBM in third place in each case.   So someone makes money in the Linux market, at least on the hardware!

The news is promising on two levels:  an increase in server sales may mean that IT spending is starting to pick up again.  The growth in Linux servers may indicate that this market is having an impact in a wider sense, beyond its cult beginnings.

Note that these are U.S. figures.  In Europe and Asia, where the recovery has not started yet, numbers are reported to be much less rosy.
