Demo 2002:  Take II
Linden Lab’s Linden World

Linden Lab’s Linden World

Last week I promised you a more detailed look at some of the good, new stuff I saw at Demo.  Here are two of the things I found appealing.  A few more will follow.

A few years ago I spent a lot of time fooling around in various parts of the 3-d graphics and VRML world.  I fell off a few chairs trying out immersive racing games, shot laser lights at fellow analysts as a helmeted warrior, and watched more useful ideas like virtual surgery for training doctors and a virtual wind tunnel for testing virtual car designs.

One of the things I tried was a kind of world construction kit which allowed you to download about a thousand pounds of software (this was before broadband, remember) and build an on-line world, complete with crude avatars, where you could meet and interact with fellow cybernauts.

Linden World looks like a lot more fun.  Targeted to the entertainment and on-line gaming market, it provides improved graphics streaming techniques to deliver a very flexible space where gamers can build complex worlds collaboratively, in real time.  This allows users to create content as well as to consume it – we’d guess there will be lots of Linden World environments, themes, and games that will be available on-line to behave as take-off points for those who are too impatient to create their own total experiences.  The World includes the ability to create realistic characters, based on wire-frame structures and to manipulate them in the constructed environment.

I think I’ll build Renaissance Italy and install myself as an inspiration to the poets and writers of the day – a kind of early Cyber Salon.

Dealigence, Inc. Empowers Service Buyers

Dealigence is designed to allow buyers of professional services to more intelligently negotiate and contract for services, improving the value they receive and the control they have over their budgets, costs, and results.

Dealigence’s offer generation and deal execution software provides sources, evaluates all aspects of a deal, supports both on-line auctions and negotiation, and provides detailed information about every aspect of the contract and its execution.  In the on-line environment, information exchange and updating is ongoing and reports about the performance of each contractor and project are available to help make future decisions.

This is the type of xSP that has the focus and expertise to provide real value to its customers.
