Travels With Amy

01/30/02
We are entering the height of the
Winter Conference Season. In
fact, there are far too many conferences, even in this year of
tightened budgets and fearful flyers. No one can get to all of them, we can only pick and choose.
In the next six weeks, we’ll be
going to:
| 1) |
Lotusphere, where Lotus updates
the faithful on the latest product announcements and futures and
business partners show their wares. We’ve been pre-briefed, so we can tell you that the Big
News will center around the unveiling of Notes 6, Hosted versions
of SameTime (to enable web conferencing), a more robust eLearning
offering, and a new services strategy, more closely aligned with
IBM.
In fact, we think the news from
Lotusphere will be that Lotus is becoming more of an IBM brand
over time and less of a separate company. Seven years after its acquisition, that seems like a
reasonable approach.
|
| 2) |
Sun’s Analyst Conference, a
good chance to hear the latest Sun strategy and product updates
and to network not only with all the Sun execs and techies, but
also with all the other analysts who cover Sun. Sun is not fond of pointed questions, but we will arrive
with lots of arrows in our quiver.
We’re particularly interested to
know what has happened to Sun’s interest in software (iPlanet,
StarOffice, et al) and whether Sun intends to follow AOL down the
suing Microsoft path.
|
| 3) |
Demo is a favorite event for
us. Chris Shipley and
Jim Forbes are terrific at putting together a spell-binding
display of new technology. They
always have something that I have not only never heard of, but
never imagined. It’s
also a great place to see old friends, who turn out in force for
this event. After
all, it’s Phoenix, it’s February, it’s warm and we can all
talk techie – how could it be bad.
We’re expecting to see lots of
new stuff – if I had to guess I’d expect some wireless, some
new combo telephony/handheld/Internet access toys, some new
concept software (business model stuff), and something I never
thought of. I love surprises.
|
| 4) |
Shortly after Demo I’ll be
heading back to San Francisco to speak at IBM’s PartnerWorld.
This is a good place to hear the Blue Strategy, and see both
IBM’s and its partners products. IBM execs are out in force, so the networking is usually
very good.
|
| 5) |
And then I’m planning to
speak at an iir conference on Web Services in London in early
March. If you’d like to join me there, the information can be
found at www.asp-summit.com.
|
It makes me breathless just to
think about it. But
we’ll tell you about anything exciting we find through Opinions.
And if you’re coming to any of these events, be sure to
stop by and say hello.
