A
new book from Rick Smolan is always a treat.
He’s done many photo extravaganzas, starting with A Day in
the Life of America. This
time they’ve outdone themselves.
Teaming with David Elliott Cohen, Rick has turned to digital
photography to produce the largest 100% digital collaborative
project in history in an amazingly short time.
The
idea was to let people across America, in every walk of life (1,200
photos submitted by 25,000 photographers in all 50 states), tell
their own stories through powerful color photos.
The impact is stunning.
The
images are organized into six chapters
covering home, work, play, belief, community, and American scenes
and accompanied by essays from some of America’s leading writers
and thinkers.
The
project is amazing. Photographers
from amateur to professional used their digital cameras to take more
than one million digital photos in one week.
These images were selected and processed entirely digitally.
This
book is the beginning of the project; next year in September, 2004,
the publishers will offer 50 additional books, one for each state.
